12-12-2018
12 December 2018, Baku: The CBA is advising the following with respect to information published on €500 banknotes in media and news portals and inquires we received:
The European Central Bank decided to end production of the €500 banknote on 4 May 2016 and stop its issuance around the end of 2018.
To that end, according to the 23 November 2018 press release by the ECB, the Deutsche Bundesbank and Oesterreichische Nationalbank will issue €500 banknotes until and including 26 April 2019, while all other euro NCBs until and including 26 January 2019.
However, after the above dates the €500 banknote will remain legal tender and continue to be used as a means of payment and store of value.
At the same time, all commercial parties (including banks, cash-in-transit companies, bureaux de change etc.) are allowed to recirculate the €500 banknote, which, like all other denominations of euro banknotes, will always retain its value and can be exchanged at the national central banks of the euro system for an unlimited period of time.
