Information on our national currency

5 April 2021, Baku: Taking into account public interest, the Central Bank once again states that our national currency is produced and put into circulation on the basis of a special concept in accordance with the decisions of the Money Reform Committee established by the relevant Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and headed by the Prime Minister.

As we know, the national currency currently in circulation was issued to circulation in 2006 after denomination measures taken with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated 7 February 2005 ‘on changing the nominal value and the scale of prices (denomination) in the Republic of Azerbaijan’. Currency under the concept dedicated to the ‘Independent Azerbaijan’ motif encompasses the following topics – 1 manat ‘Culture and art’, 5 manat ‘Literature and writings’, 10 manat ‘History’,  20 manat ‘Garabagh’, 50 manat ‘Education and future’,  100 manat ‘Economy and development’ and  200 manat to ‘Modern architecture’.

To note, over 15 years of existence this concept has remained relevant due to its subject matter, aesthetic appearance and security elements.

However, based on the international experience, to strengthen security systems of our currency and increase its resistance to counterfeiting, their design and security elements are updated in accordance with the relevant decision of the Money Reform Committee.

During the renewal, the main design elements reflected on our banknotes in circulation and characterizing the topic of the relevant denomination were retained as the main motif. Taking into account the latest innovations in the international practice, the renewed 1, 5 and 50 manats were put into circulation at the beginning of this year.

We would like to note that the Central Bank is also planning to issue to circulation a series of commemorative coins to stick upon memory the Patriotic War fought by our brave army under the leadership of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Dear President Ilham Aliyev for the liberation of our ancient lands, Karabakh, perpetuate the memory of the heroes of the Patriotic War, glorify the history, national and cultural heritage, flora and fauna of our regions and convey them to the international community.
