Central Bank issues to circulation upgraded currency

8 December 2021, Baku. In international practice, central banks upgrade the design and security elements of currency periodically to strengthen anti-counterfeiting, introduce the state-of-art technologies and innovations and make the people satisfied.

In light of the international practice based upon the decisions of the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan the Central Bank started to upgrade the national currency within the current concept with the application of the most recent innovations, Nano and micro currency technologies and issued to circulation 1, 5 and 50 manat upgraded banknotes to circulation early year.

As a follow-up of the process, the 20 manat currency dedicated to the ‘Karabakh’ motif has been upgraded in terms of design and security elements within the current concept using the most recent innovations.

The Central Bank of Azerbaijan is announcing that it will issue to circulation the 20 manat currency with upgraded design and progressive security elements on 10 February 2022.

3D hologram, miraculous Spark Live element (dynamic light effects and color changing images), watermark (the Coat of Arms of the Republic of Azerbaijan and denomination visible at light), visually impaired recognition feature (lines on the right and left of the obverse of the note can help blind and sight impaired persons to recognize the value of the note), vertical design (back of the currency is designed vertically in line with the most up-to-date trend in banknote production), security thread, iridescent ink, micro texts and others have been applied in the upgraded 20 manat banknote as the most recent security elements.

Currently adaptation of all cash systems and devices is under way throughout the country.

At the same time, the Central Bank upgraded the design of the 20 gapik metal coin and issued to circulation. The Coat of Arms and the production year have been added onto the 20 gapik coin. Technical parameters of the 20 gapik coin have been left unchanged in line with the same denomination metal coin.

We would like to inform you that upgraded 20 manat banknote and 20 gapik metal coin will be in parallel circulation with the currency of the same denomination and be used as a legal tender.
